Crowned Lion

1971 - Ten Pence (10p) - Circulation

Description

Designed by Christopher Ironside, the new Ten Pence coin featured a crowned lion passant guardant, a heraldic symbol of England. Below is the value ‘10’ with the inscription ‘NEW PENCE’ above. Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the Obverse. The ‘large type’ Ten Pence coin was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation in 1993 after a smaller version was introduced the previous year.
