The design series depicting heraldic emblems was earmarked for a second release between 1999-2002. Due to a lack of demand, however, the One Pound coin was not issued into circulation in 1998 or 1999, One Pound coins with these dates can only be found in presentation sets. By 2000 more One Pound coins were needed so the second design of the series was issued. As in 1995, it portrayed an image of a dragon passant to represent Wales. Below the dragon sits the inscription ‘ONE POUND’. The obverse shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
