Description

Design number three in the heraldic emblems series represents Northern Ireland. Norman Sillman chose a Celtic cross with pimpernel flower at its centre, the cross is surmounted by an image of the Broighter collar. Part of the Broighter Hoard, the collar is one of several gold artefacts found in 1896 on farmland in Northern Ireland. The words ‘ONE POUND’ are inscribed below the Broighter collar, separated by the base of the cross. The obverse features Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
